Fybogel contains the active ingredient ispaghula husk, a kind of medicine also known as bulk-forming laxative. It comes in the effervescent granules pharmaceutical form. The medicine is excellent for treatment of patients who require high-fiber regimen. It can be utilized to treat constipation especially during pregnancy and to maintain normal bowel function in various bowel disorders in patients with ileostomy, haemorrhoids, colostomy, fissure and chronic diarrhoea associated with diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis.

Fybogel takes its effectiveness from a fiber known as Ispaghula. This fiber swells when it comes into contact with fluid in the gut and thus increasing the volume of the faeces. It is not absorbed into the body. The increased bowel mass stimulates the muscles in the walls of the bowel that in turn pushes the contents of the bowel along, which helps to relieve the constipation. However, it may take a day or two for the improvement in bowel movement of taking the medicine. In case of side effects, patient may experience bloating or swelling of stomach or excess gas in the stomach and intestines.

Fybogel lemon is intended for oral use as a suspension in a drink of water. The granules should be stirred into the glass of water and taken as soon as the effervescence subsides. Importantly, it should be preferably taken after the meals or as prescribed by the physician.
